Tile Estimator

Enter your surface dimensions and tile size to calculate tile quantity.

How It Works

The calculator determines the total area of your surface and divides it by the area of a single tile. You can also add a waste percentage to account for cuts and breakage.

Formula Used

  • Surface Area: length ร— width
  • Tile Area: (tile length รท 100) ร— (tile width รท 100)
  • Tiles Needed: surface area รท tile area
  • With Waste: tiles ร— (1 + waste รท 100)

Example

For a 5m ร— 3m room using 30cm ร— 30cm tiles with 10% waste:

  • Surface Area = 15 mยฒ
  • Tile Area = 0.09 mยฒ
  • Tiles Needed = 167
  • With Waste = 184 tiles

FAQ

How much waste should I add?
Typically 5โ€“15%, depending on tile pattern and room shape.

Does tile orientation matter?
No โ€” area-based calculations remain the same.

Can I use this for wall tiles?
Yes โ€” works for both floors and walls.

Choosing the Right Waste Percentage

Tile waste depends on the layout and room shape. Use these guidelines:

Tile Patterns That Increase Waste

Certain tile layouts require more cutting and therefore more waste:

Additional FAQ

Do tile boxes cover a fixed area?
Yes. Most tile boxes list coverage in square meters. Compare your required area with the box coverage.

Should I include grout spacing?
Grout lines are small and do not significantly affect area. The calculator remains accurate without them.

Can I use this calculator for outdoor tiles?
Yes โ€” the calculation is the same for indoor and outdoor surfaces.

Does tile thickness matter?
Thickness does not affect area, so it does not change tile quantity.
